To be clear, this is not a case of the Dark Side versus the Light. In fact, John and I completely agree that capitalism has brought more people out of poverty than any other social innovation in human history. I am by no means arguing that commercial entrepreneurship is less worthy of pursuit than its social counterpart. Despite my seeming partisanship, my own work in the field has spanned the full startup spectrum, from grassroots community organizing to the launch of a consumer electronics company, Yurbuds, to the trials of launching and scaling The Mission Center L3C’s varied products and services as a hybrid social enterprise. For what it’s worth, I am not speaking as an outsider on these issues.
